The percentage of ad revenue paid to bloggers is unknown. In response to a question about how ad revenue is split between WordPress and publishers, founding developer Matt Mullenweg responded, “Our primary goal is to create something that rewards bloggers for their hard work and the quality of their work, and do so at a higher level than generic Adsense would, not optimize around a particular revenue share.”

To qualify for the WordAds program, blogs must be publicly visible and have a custom domain. Applying to the program doesn’t ensure acceptance; WordPress will choose participants based on the type of content, and traffic/engagement levels.

WordAds will be a welcome alternative for AdSense publishers affected by Google’s recent payment system/account interface bug and other issues that prevented timely payouts.

Google have officially announced the acquisition of a Display Optimisation company called Teracent. Google have already expressed how they wish to use the companies tools to help advertisers on both the DoubleClick network and Google Content Network. See below for a quote from the Official Google Blog:

“Teracent’s technology can pick and choose from literally thousands of creative elements of a display ad in real-time — tweaking images, products, messages or colors. These elements can be optimized depending on factors like geographic location, language, the content of the website, the time of day or the past performance of different ads.

This technology can help advertisers get better results from their display ad campaigns. In turn, this enables publishers to make more money from their ad space and delivers web users better ads and more ad-funded web content…”

Google recently announced the launch of Internet based advertising, this is a new platform of advertising for Google which will allow Adwords advertisers to target ads based on the users interests and sites visited. The service will start in beta, and if successful moved into every Adwords customers inventory. Here’s a small quote from the official Google blog regarding the announcement:

”Keyword advertising has been so successful because it’s useful to users, advertisers and publishers — everyone’s interests are aligned. We believe that interest-based ads will create the same virtuous cycle, by giving users more relevant ads, while generating higher returns for advertisers and publishers….” Read the full article

There has already been lots of controversy regarding this new release with concerns for privacy, one article explains:

“Two online privacy groups slammed Google for launching a behavioral advertising program, with one advocate calling Google’s plan a privacy “disaster.”

Google’s proposal would bring user tracking to the world’s largest ad network, said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. “It’s a disaster,” he said. “It’s about whether the most dominant Internet media firm should be able to exploit its access to Internet user data for advertising purposes. Google long maintained it would not do this type of advertising. Indeed, they claimed they didn’t need to and they went after others who did…..” Read the full article.

Last week the Google AdSense team announced the launch of expandable Ads, this will allow advertisers (third party) to place large ads on the Google Content Network, these ads will expand once clicked on and will allow advertisers to add both videos, links and images to a single ad. Currently this is only available in the US and is not available to AdWords customers, only third party advertisers will get their hands on this. Although they have implied on the Adwords blog that it will be expanded to Adwords customers in the UK and US if it’s succesful.

Venture Beat have written about this new development for Adsense, below is a small quote:

”If you’ve used the Internet at all in the past few years, you’ve undoubtedly already seen these from other ad providers. They are ads that start out as regular box or rectangle ads, but then expand into much larger ones that sit on top of content. Yes, they are annoying.”

In the wake of Yahoo’s anouncement that its content network will be shutting down as of the 31st March, Google have shown that the content network can, and does, work. Research by Efficient Frontier has shown that impressions on Googles Content Network have grown by over 300% year on year as advertisers divert money from MSN and Yahoo.

The NMA, had this to say on it:

Its UK Search Engine Performance Report Q4 2008 found impressions on Google’s Content Network, which includes search-based AdSense ads on sites such as MySpace, Telegraph.co.uk and LastFM, surged 308% year on year to account for 6.4% of all UK search impressions.

The latest growth serves yet another blow to rivals Yahoo and Microsoft. Yahoo Search alone saw search spend fall to 8.4% in Q4 from 13.9% the previous year.

The news follows massive investment by Google in its Content Network in 2008, including the rollout of new ad formats and, in October, third-party ad serving.

In contrast, Yahoo announced earlier this month it’s to close Content Match, its text-based equivalent to Google’s AdSense, in Europe to focus on rich-media ad sales.

The Efficient Frontier report said in Q4 2008 the UK search market grew 14% quarter on quarter and 11% year on year, with Google now receiving 88.2% of all spend, up from 82.6% in Q4 2007.

The figures are in stark contrast to Efficient Frontier’s equivalent report for the US, released last week, which said Q4 search budgets there had been cut by 8% year on year.

Last week, Google released a new tool in which you can create your own Display Ads for the Google Content Network. With this tool you can place images, text, call to actions and logos all into your ad in a number of simple steps on 1 page. The tool will also automatically resize and format the ad into different sizes. Unfortunately this tool is only available in the US and Canada at the moment, but I’m sure it will soon be integrated into Europe. See below for a quote from the Google Blog and a video:

“Today we released the AdWords display ad builder, which lets you create professional-looking display ads in AdWords without needing to hire a designer or start from scratch. If you’ve wanted to expand beyond your text ad campaigns, or if you’ve been looking for an easier way to build display ads, this tool can help.

This new tool lets you create customized display ads with your own text, images, and logo. You can also change colors and backgrounds. The tool can create ads to fit all possible placements across the Google content network, including video and game placements. The display ad builder is available now to all advertisers in the U.S. and Canada.“

”Do you develop or publish web-based games? If so, you’re contributing to a growing trend – according to comScore, over 25% of Internet users play online games every week, which is over 200 million users worldwide. As a beta user of AdSense for Games, you can display video ads, image ads, or text ads within your online games to earn revenue. You’ll be able to show these ads in placements you define, such as interstitial frames before a game, after a level change, or when a game is over. Members of our AdWords team will sell your in-game ad placements directly to top brand advertisers, and you’ll also see contextually targeted text and image ads based on content and demographic information. In addition, you’ll be able to control the ads you see on your pages using our filtering options.”

It was announced last night that the Yahoo Paid Search Ads will now be powered by Google AdSense for Search. Along with this they are also partnering with Google Adsense for Content to allow Google Ads on Yahoo web properties along with its partner network. Below is taken from Yahoo’s Official Statement:

” SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 12, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Google Inc. that will enhance its ability to compete in the converging search and display marketplace, advancing the company’s open strategy. The agreement enables Yahoo! to run ads supplied by Google alongside Yahoo!’s search results and on some of its web properties in the United States and Canada. The agreement is non-exclusive, giving Yahoo! the ability to display paid search results from Google, other third parties, and Yahoo!’s own Panama marketplace. ”
