			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few days ago Google made a few changes in the way sessions are calculated in Google Analytics.</p>
<p>Currently, Google Analytics ends a session when:</p>
<div>
<ul>
<li>More than 30 minutes have elapsed between pageviews for a single visitor.</li>
<li>At the end of a day.</li>
<li>When a visitor closes their browser.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>If any of these events occur, then the next pageview from the visitor will start a new session.</div>
<div>In the new model, Google Analytics will end a session when:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>More than 30 minutes have elapsed between pageviews for a single visitor.</li>
<li>At the end of a day.</li>
<li>When any traffic source value for the user changes. Traffic source information includes: <em>utm_source</em>, <em>utm_medium</em>, <em>utm_term</em>, <em>utm_content</em>, <em>utm_id</em>, <em>utm_campaign</em>, and <em>gclid</em>.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<p>If any of these events occurs, the next page the visitor views will count as a new session.</p>
<p>How will this affect our Google Analytics data?</p>
<p>This change will apply only to new visitors. Historical data remains unchanged.</p>
<p>Google aims to align the definition of session with a common visit, so that if a visitor leaves our site and comes back via a different source of traffic (search engines, direct traffic ,referring sites, etc), that user will show up in Analytics as a new visitor.</p>
<p>Those who are interested in knowing how Google&#8217;s algorithm update &#8220;Panda&#8221; affected their traffic, will find  a more reliable comparison for &#8220;unique users&#8221; in Google Analyics.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Before Panda there was Caffeine, last year with the now not so recent Google Algorithm update &#8216;Caffeine&#8217;, page load time became a much publicised factor in how Google ranks it search results, the message was clear Google told everyone: REDUCE THE SIZE OF YOUR WEB PAGES.</p>
<p>To aid us all in our devoted missions to please Google, they have now introduced a site speed report in their Google Analytics tool enabling everyone to measure the page loading times of their website and diagnose where any issues lie. To enable the site speed report you will need to switch to the latest version of Google analytics and insert a small line in your tracking code.</p>
<p>You can find the Site Speed report in the newest version of Google Analytics under content reports.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3196" title="Google analytics page load time" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Google-Analytics-Page-Load-.jpg" alt="Google analytics page load time" /></p>
<p>At the moment all your values should show 0 in the Page Load Time and Page Load Sample attributes of the report.  To enable Analytics to start tracking and recording data you will need to add a line of code to your Google Analytics tracking code:</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #00cc00;">_gaq.push(['_trackPageLoadTime']);</span></strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>See the following example with Page Load Time code installed, please note this is if you are using the Asynchronous tracking code (your tracking code is in your &lt;head&gt; section of your site):</p>
<pre>&lt;script&gt;
 var _gaq = _gaq || [];
 _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);
 _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
<span style="color: #00cc00;"> <strong>_gaq.push(['_trackPageLoadTime']);</strong></span>

 (function() {
   var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
   ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www')</pre>
<pre>+ '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
   var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
 })();
&lt;/script&gt;</pre>
<p>If you are using the older traditional tracking code you will need to add the following:</p>
<pre>&lt;script&gt;
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js'</pre>
<pre> type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
&lt;/script&gt;

&lt;script&gt;
try{
 var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxx-x");
 pageTracker._trackPageview();
 <strong><span style="color: #00cc00;">pageTracker._trackPageLoadTime();</span></strong>
} catch(err) {}
&lt;/script&gt;</pre>
<p>You should start to receive data within a few hours.</p>

Ross Hoffman announced that later this year they&#8217;d begin to offer a beta service to some users, and they sure did!</p>
<p>Twitter reports that they have selected a group of users and invited them to use the trial version. As reported in September, a privileged group of users were already using Twitter analytics: Andrew Nystrom of RedBull and Brad Nelson of Starbucks, had a conversation on Twitter ensuring that the service worked great and that it was really helpful.</p>
<p>Red Bull and Starbucks are part of the promoted tweets program, many believed that the service would be limited to companies that participated in the program, but it seems that Twitter has the intention of making it available to all users, and free!</p>
<p>What do we know about Twitter Analytics?</p>
<p>Web analytics services intend to report on the impact of online activity. Twitter Analytics reports on the number of tweets, retweets, and of course the most popular tweets.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/twitter-analytics2.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2308" title="twitter-analytics2" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/twitter-analytics2.jpg" alt="" width="535" height="312" /></a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/real-time-analytics.png"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2226" title="real-time-analytics" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/real-time-analytics.png" alt="" width="150" height="100" /></a>Many small businesses struggle when competing with large companies. For those who focus their business on the Internet, real-time analytics is a very useful tool that can help them increase profits.</p>
<p>Practically since the Internet was created, there are tools to help webmasters measure traffic on Web sites. Systems were initially based on log files or log files that offered a general idea of the number of &#8216;hits&#8217; per week. Over time they have developed more accurate and detailed tools which typically use a combination of JavaScript and cookies to track human activity and filter the bots.</p>
<p>Despite how advanced and detailed are some tools like Google Analytics, they tend slow down when data accumulates, which is increasingly problematic as the Internet continues to grow and increase its speed. Some services take up to 24 hours to gather the data, which is a bit annoying when your business needs real time analytic data.</p>
<p>A series of analytical solutions for real time date have emerged in recent years, offering Web masters a detailed look of what happens on their sites at any time. Products such as Woopra, Optify, Chartbeat, Clicky and ClickTale. Most of these products have relatively low prices, so a small businesses could benefit greatly from these tools.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pantall-chartbeat-dashboard.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2227" title="pantall-chartbeat-dashboard" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pantall-chartbeat-dashboard.png" alt="" width="545" height="424" /></a><br />
<strong>Where are they coming from?</strong></p>
<p>As the standard analytics software, the real time tool can define whether users are coming from a search engine as Google, a shared link on Facebook or somewhere else. For all businesses is crucial to tracks the effects of their SEO strategies and Social Media campaigns.</p>
<p><strong>How do they find your site?</strong></p>
<p>One of the main benefits that offer real-time analytics is the ability to see in real time what terms users type in Google, Bing or any other search engine when looking for your site.</p>

<p>So there you have it, an ever growing list of Google related products that we use on a day to day basis without even realising it. I think that the day is soon approaching where we don&#8217;t even refer to it as the Internet any more and it will be simply named Google&#8230; Instead of &#8220;Surfing the Web&#8221;, it will be &#8220;Surfing the Google&#8221;, granted it&#8217;s not very catchy but you get my point!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So you&#8217;ve created a facebook fan page and you’ve got a few fans, but to really know how many people are viewing your page and where they are coming from you need to see the facts and figures. This tutorial will show you how to add Google Analytics tracking to your Facebook Fan Page.</p>
<h2><strong>Step 1.  Google Analytics setup</strong></h2>
<p>First of all, if you haven’t already create yourself a Google analytics account at <cite><a href="http://www.google.com/analytics/">www.<strong>google</strong>.com/<strong>analytics</strong>/</a> </cite><cite>and create a new Website profile specifically for the fan page. Call it something like facebook.com or facebook.com/page_name and click finish.  You will be given a unique analytics tracking code, all we need from this code is the UA number e.g. UA-1456736-8</cite></p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/analyticsnew4.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1203" title="analyticsnew" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/analyticsnew4.jpg" alt="analyticsnew" /></a></p>
<p><cite> </cite></p>
<h2><strong><cite>Step 2.  Make your tracking code Facebook friendly</cite></strong></h2>
<p><cite>Now there’s a <a href="http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/">handy tool</a> from webdigi that will turn your analytics code into an image that you can add to facebook &#8211; </cite><a href="http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/">http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/</a></p>
<p>Fill out the form with the following:</p>
<ol>
<li><cite>1. </cite>Your unique analytics code “<cite>UA-1456736-8”</cite><cite></cite></li>
<li><cite>2. </cite><cite>The Domain name that you entered into Google analytics e.g. facebook.com</cite><cite></cite></li>
<li>Page link is to identify the fan page when you see it analytics e.g. home_page</li>
<li>This is a short description of the page e.g. Home Page</li>
</ol>
<p>Then click on generate code</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/image-generator.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1185" title="image-generator" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/image-generator.jpg" alt="image-generator" /></a></p>
<p>The generated code should look like this:</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;">&lt;img src=&#8217;http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/fbga.php?googlecode=UA-1456736-8&amp;googledomain=facebook.com&amp;pagelink=home_page&amp;pagetitle=Home%20Page&#8217;&gt;&lt;/img&gt;</span></p>
<p>Now keep the code safe for step 3</p>
<h2><strong>Step 3. Add the code to your Facebook fan page</strong></h2>
<p>Go to your Fan page and Click &#8220;edit page&#8221;</p>
<p>Scroll down to &#8220;more applications&#8221; and click to add the application called “static FBML” also know as: Static Facebook Markup language</p>
<p>Then click add to my page</p>
<p>Go back to your fan page and click on &#8220;boxes&#8221; and then Click the icon to edit the FBML and click move to wall which will move the static FBML box to a tab on your fan home page</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/move-to-wall1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1191" title="move-to-wall" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/move-to-wall1.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="106" /></a></p>
<p>Go back to your Fan page and again click onto &#8220;edit page&#8221; and scroll down to the FBML section and click &#8220;edit&#8221;.  Now this is where you paste the image code created in step 2 and click save changes.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/save-changes.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1193" title="save-changes" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/save-changes.jpg" alt="" width="617" height="427" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Voila! </strong>Now all you have to do is wait about 24hours and Google will start tracking traffic to your page</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At the last Election in May 2005, social networking sites were few and far between.  YouTube had only been going for 3 months, Facebook was largely unheard of and no one really used blogs.  How different that all looks 5 years on.</p>
<p>It was predicted to be an &#8216;Internet Election&#8217; with savvy politicians instantly updating their followers through Facbook and Twitter.  In fact, it hasn&#8217;t really been the important player we all thought it would be.  Party officials are insisting on vetting new material before it&#8217;s posted on blogs, with good reason (think <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/scotland/8647206.stm">Philip Lardner suspension</a> ).  And Twitter  hasn&#8217;t delivered as a campaigning tool either &#8211; great to spread the word but not at directly communicating and engaging with voters ( another politician gaffe by <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/election/article-1264940/Labour-ditches-Stuart-MacLennan-foul-mouthed-rants-Twitter.html">Stuart MacLennon</a> ditched for being a &#8216;Twitter Twit&#8217;!).</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, we&#8217;ve seen a great variety of new media tools being used throughout the Election such as blogs and podcasts, with both Cameron and Brown posting weekly.  Campaign posters have been photoshopped and gone viral, e.g. Labours Ashes to Ashes poster.  And of course we&#8217;re all Googling like mad to find out more about parties, policies and politicians.  For example the first leaders&#8217; debate on April 15th grabbed  a lot of media attention with a 3.6% increase in visits to political sites, and searches for &#8216;Nick Clegg&#8217; coming out on top, with a few peculiar and less expected keywords making an appearance such as &#8216;Nick Clegg height&#8217; and &#8216;Nick Clegg atheist&#8217;!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nick-clegg.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-1010   aligncenter" title="Nick Clegg Effect" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nick-clegg.png" alt="Nick Clegg Effect" width="529" height="422" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">New media hasn&#8217;t then been a replacement for traditonal campaigning but it has meant more people can be involved more closely and that word gets around quicker.  It&#8217;s anone&#8217;s guess what the campaigning landscape will look like in another 5 years time.</p>
