Last week a blog post by Bing developers stated that they have started giving localised and personal search results. This means that results from the Bing search engine will defer from place to place and also on browser history of the user.

Now Bing will automatically tailor every search results based on your physical location. If you search for “Things to do” in your Bing seach box, it recognises your location and displays attractions or things to do from your location.

Perhaps you are wondering why talk about Bing when we have Google

Some of you may not even care about this search engine from Microsoft …

“But according to Nielsen, last week Bing surpassed Yahoo’s share of search volume becoming the second most used browser in the United States. ”

Obviously Google still dominates the first place, but it seems like even Eric Schmidt took notice of Bing’s achievement:

“Right now, Bing is Google’s strongest competitor … even stronger than Apple or Facebook.”

I’m not saying you should change your link building strategy right now, but you should start tracking your positions on Bing, especially now that they are powering the results for Yahoo..

So, do you see Bing and Google going “mano a mano” anytime soon?

How does this work I hear you ask? Well, first of all you need to install the Bing toolbar, have a Windows live ID, be on a Windows machine and use internet explorer. No Chrome, Firefox or Macs.

Once you have completed that process you will be rewarded with 250 credits. Additional ways to stack up your points after that will have to be done by taking desired Bing actions or conducting search queries. According to Bing’s FAQ: “You can take advantage of offers to earn credits. Offers may include earning credits for conducting searches on Bing, setting your browser search defaults to Bing, or trying out new Bing features.”

Apparently 5 searches are worth the equivalent of 1 credit point and you can receive a maximum of 8 points per day. Below is a list of things you could potentially win if you choose to stay loyal to Bing:

So if you save up your credits for just under a year, you can qualify for a Scrabble game (8 credits per day X 359 days = 2872 credits). Yippee!

Apparently Bing have released this new feature to get casual users to become more engaged and have conversations with them about Bing’s functions and capabilities. The Bing toolbar will unobtrusively push suggestions, messages and new features to their users.

Microsoft say that they would love to gain as many new users as possible from a direct result of Bing Rewards, this is not their primary objective and they know it will be a hard task to break the Google habit.

Personally I think that the Salad utensil set has sealed the deal for me, its just too good to resist! (I’m joking of course).

In the example of the next image I’ve searched for [real madrid] and in the right sidebar Bing recommends me a few accounts I should follow on Twitter: Real Madrid, Özil and Cristinano Ronaldo. Bing differentiates the suggestions between popular and influential.

At the bottom we can see how Bing also shows real time results related to our search.

Bing announces that in the future we’ll see more changes … so don’t stop checking our blog for updates!

Last night Yahoo announced that they will be making changes to it’s Search back-end infrastructure. Unfortunately Yahoo Search Monkey will no longer be supported (although they will continue to index current Search Monkey apps) and as of October 1st 2010 it will be no more. MyBlogLog will also be shutdown. Developers will now also be charged to use Yahoo BOSS. But there is good news! Both Yahoo & Bing will continue to support Yahoo Site Explorer – this was a big concern for SEOs who use Site Explorer as an every day tool. For now any changes are only going to take place in the US & Canada. See below for a quote from the Official Yahoo Developer Blog:

“Today we’re making some important announcements on the transition of our Search back-end infrastructure to Microsoft, and how this transition impacts the Search APIs and web services we offer on the Yahoo! Developer Network. We are also sharing specific news about several of our other developer services.

Over recent years, Yahoo! has made a commitment to developers by opening products, services, and canvases for third-party innovation. This commitment remains unwavering. For example, we recently announced new canvases and APIs as part of our Zynga deal. At the same time, we have to align our developer offerings with our products and strategy….”

Yahoo announced that they are already running tests on Yahoo’s search engine with Bing’s algorithm, for organic and paid results.

They said that these tests will only be seen on a maximum of 25% of the U.S. searches.
Yahoo and Microsoft’s mobile services are slowly integrating, same thing will happen with the search engines during the summer, hopes are that in September/October it will we fully integrated for the United States and Canada.

In this picture we can see search results of Yahoo and Bing working together (the yellow boxes are Bing)

This means that the search Bing’s algorithm will be fully integrated into Yahoo’s search engine, therefore our ranking positions in Bing must be taken into account, since these serps will also be in Yahoo in a few months.

The Wall Street Journal report that MySpace is in talks with Yahoo and Bing for a new search deal. See below for a quote from the WSJ:

“News Corp. is in discussions with Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. about replacing MySpace’s crucial search-advertising partnership with Google, which expires next month, according to people familiar with the matter.

Under the existing deal, Google agreed to make up to $900 million in guaranteed payments for the right to sell small ads as users surf and tap out searches on News Corp.’s My Space.com and on a handful of smaller News Corp. websites.”

It will be difficult for MySpace to find a new deal worth any more than Google’s offer with their decreasing number of users. We’ll let you know if we hear anything!

As Microsoft launched its Bing Entertainment search hub, look who else might be rolling out a music service, tied in with its search engine of its own. There’s a rumor in the ranks which was started a couple of days before the Bing Entertainment launch and has since been jumped on by the whole damn world.

If you arent up to speed; Bing Entertainment is a deep contextual search engine. It was build based on the fact that;

“Ten percent of search queries are entertainment-related,” Bing said on its blog post. This is why the search engine has gone full power on its new entertainment-centric tool. So the idea behind this new service is to attract all fun/entertainment/multimedia-related searches to one single destination on Bing’s dedicated site

Anyway, this is a blog about Google not Bing, i digress, So, So far, Google was offering streaming music on its platform via its partners, Pandora and iLike. However, the WSJ report said that the company is now looking to integrate its own music services to its search platform. Apparently, the search giant is set to unveil the music service “later this year, followed by an online subscription service in 2011.” Apparently, Google has been pushing talks with record labels to offer music via phones running on Android. well well!!

AND

Google is already at odds with Apple the operating platform issue of iPhone vs Android. Apple is also said to be ready to leave Google for Bing in terms of search engine offer for its iPhone. Apple have already let Bing through the door by making it one of the search engine choices for Safari. All this entertainment lark would add to the list of griefs…

Keep your adCenter account and augment — easiest with fewest steps.

Create a new adCenter and import your third party structure — best for streamlining accounts with a large number of campaigns.

Create a new adCenter account and import your Yahoo structure – recommended if you have no adCenter account.

Finally they gave the following graphic to explain what the two sides of the alliance will working on:
