Google says that this way developers will be encouraged to create a more open Internet.

But there are those who don’t agree , and instead think that it will simply complicate the already controversial migration to HTML5.

Google’s explains in its Chromium project blog the reasons which led to this decision:

“We expect even more rapid innovation in the web media platform in the coming year and are focusing our investments in those technologies that are developed and licensed based on open web principles. To that end, we are changing Chrome’s HTML5 <video> support to make it consistent with the codecs already supported by the open Chromium project. Specifically, we are supporting the WebM (VP8) and Theora video codecs, and will consider adding support for other high-quality open codecs in the future. Though H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.”

Last night Google held an event to highlight the release of a number of new products from the Chrome team. First of all they highlighted a few new features of Chrome including the PDF integration, a new cloud to printer option in which you can print documents on any printer anywhere in the world and a new faster java script engine which claims to have improved the speed of Chrome. They also announced that the people using Chrome has now tripled from 40 to 120 Million.

They then went on to announce the new Chrome Web Store, which allows developers to make applications which run exclusively in Chrome which they can then sell or put ads inside. There are already a number of free and paid apps in the app store including an app from the New York Times, Plants vs Zombies (a popular mobile game), TweetDeck (a Twitter/Facebook app) and more. Google have said that the store is currently only working in the USA, but i was able to get into the store just now and downloaded a number of apps, so try it out for yourselves by going to the Chrome Web Store.

Finally, they introduced the long awaited Chrome OS for netbooks and laptops, which is a cloud based operating system using a number of Google apps. Applications on Chrome OS include Google Docs (which was also showcased with offline support), a Gmail Application, News Applications (which you can now get on the Chrome Web Store) and more. They showcased the new OS on a new laptop which they will be giving out to selected beta participants who can apply online. Setting up and logging into the machine itself takes less than a minute – simply enter you’re Google login details and it will automatically sync your account with your netbook. Google also announced that there will be more netbooks out on sale next year from Samsung and Acer.

So there you have it, an ever growing list of Google related products that we use on a day to day basis without even realising it. I think that the day is soon approaching where we don’t even refer to it as the Internet any more and it will be simply named Google… Instead of “Surfing the Web”, it will be “Surfing the Google”, granted it’s not very catchy but you get my point!

Gamescom is currently taking place over in Germany and on Monday Google were at the conference previewing Google Chrome Web Store and its gaming credentials. It seems Google are making a big push into the gaming market, they showed off both Chromes Gaming possibilities and the advantages of it’s Chrome Web Store. They began the conference talking about the benefits of using Chrome for gaming , mainly revolving around its speed and why developers should be excited about the new App Web Store. They then went on to show both screenshots and videos of Games playing on Chrome and also screenshots of what the Web Store will look like (which some have already stated looks like the Apple App Store) This could be the beginning of a big push from Google into In Game marketing which Microsoft have been doing for a while. Google have also purchased a number of online Game developers. See below for a video from the conference or read more at 1up.com:

They have said that in particular it’s looking much more cut down and cleaner. They also have a number of brand new features including a new options panel, a new side bar option for browser tabs, new log in screens, notification pop ups and a new content browser. Google Chrome OS is definitely looking more like a finished product now than when we first saw the early beta screenshots. Expect to see Chrome OS on machines in time for Christmas 2010. Click here to view the full article with screenshots at TechCrunch.

The Google I/O event is a big conference in which Google showoff everything they’ve been working on and what they plan to work on in the future. This will include Google Search, Google Android, Chrome OS, Google Chrome and way more. You can watch the event live from YouTube. See below for a quote from the Google Blog:

“More than 4,000 developers will be joining us at Google I/O on May 19-20, and if we had the capacity, we’d host many more. In order to give the entire developer community a chance to participate live, we’re happy to announce that both keynote presentations will be streamed live. To watch, just go tohttp://www.youtube.com/GoogleDevelopers at the start of the keynotes each day. We recommend watching on a high-speed connection for the best quality.

Here’s the schedule for the keynotes at I/O — it’s also available on our agenda page:

Day 1 Keynote: Wednesday, May 19, 9:00 -10:30am PT

Day 2 Keynote: Thursday, May 20, 8:30-10:00am PT “

Be sure to tune in!

See below for a quote:

“Google’s Chrome OS Netbook will feature a host of built-in security technologies designed to protect users from malware and other threats, a Google engineer said at the RSA Conference Thursday.

Will Drewry, a Google software security engineer, said the fact that the company’s Chrome OS is an open source project allows for constant feedback from developers regarding security design. This, he said, should reassure those acquiring a Google Netbook about the product’s security.

Google plans to release a consumer version later this year and a business version featuring more management muscle in 2011, Drewry said……”

See below for a quote from the Official Google Blog:

“Today we’re excited to introduce a new stable release of Google Chrome for Windows, which includes two of the browser’s most frequently requested features: extensions and bookmark sync.

Extensions let you add new features and functions to your browser. Some provide one-click access to some of your favorite web applications like eBay and digg, or news and information sources such as NPR and Time.com. Others are useful tweaks for performing common online tasks such as browsing photos, getting directions or shopping.

We previously launched extensions on the beta channel, and many new extensions have since been contributed by developers from all over the world. Now you can browse over 1,500 in our extensions gallery and install them on the stable version of Google Chrome….”

Does this mean more people will start to move over from Firefox now extensions are available?? Tweet @tugsearch your thoughts! Download your new version of Google Chrome for Windows here.
