			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As of the start of November Google is now encrypting its user search data for searchers that are logged into a Google account and as a result they have stopped sharing keyword data for any organic search terms from users searching while logged in, currently this is only active from google.com but is expected to be rolled out to other locations. If you look in your Google analytics account you are going to see the keyword (not provided) sending traffic that meets this criteria.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3996" title="Google encryption not provided data" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Google-encryption-not-provided-data.png" alt="Google encryption not provided data" width="529" height="43" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So far industry figures and Google engineers have suggested that the percentage of traffic affected could be anywhere between 5-30%, with Google&#8217;s Matt Cutts suggesting that the figure would sit well below 10% while some websites have reported figures <a href="http://econsultancy.com/uk/blog/8263-the-horror-google-now-encrypts-up-to-33-of-search-referral-data">closer to 33%</a>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I believe this is going to vary massively per industry, dependent on the user base, for example if the audience are more tech savvy they might be more likely to have Google+ accounts from which they are likely to be logged in more often than not.  I would expect (not provided) keyword coverage to be alot higher for readers of tech blogs than perhaps food blogs.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have analysed Google analytics  keyword data across 5 different verticals that I have access to, looking at traffic just from the US to see how this is varying after just two weeks and as expected this differs hugely from site to site and industry to industry.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">The following shows the percentage of US organic search traffic coming from (not provided) keywords, in 5 different industries<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4000" title="Google secure searches per industry - Not provided" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Google-secure-searches-per-industry-Not-provided.png" alt="Google secure searches per industry - Not provided" width="581" height="389" /></p>
<p>From my knowledge of the websites used for the 5 industries above the two industries with the largest number of visitors coming by way of (not provided) keywords have the youngest target audience, which again suggests that websites that attract younger more tech-savvy visitors are likely to get less keyword data, than say finance which out of the industries analysed presents the lowest number of searches from users that were logged into google.com.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I will be expanding this analysis across different industries to see how it further varies and I definitely need to look into more websites within the 5 industries above to see if this pattern continues.  What is certain is that the initial predictions of (not provided) keyword data being in just single digit figures is already majorly incorrect for a number of websites/ industries and depending on the uptake of Google+ this could increase at a rapid rate very quickly.</p>
<p>Any questions give me a tweet at <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/neil_seo">@neil_seo</a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Before Panda there was Caffeine, last year with the now not so recent Google Algorithm update &#8216;Caffeine&#8217;, page load time became a much publicised factor in how Google ranks it search results, the message was clear Google told everyone: REDUCE THE SIZE OF YOUR WEB PAGES.</p>
<p>To aid us all in our devoted missions to please Google, they have now introduced a site speed report in their Google Analytics tool enabling everyone to measure the page loading times of their website and diagnose where any issues lie. To enable the site speed report you will need to switch to the latest version of Google analytics and insert a small line in your tracking code.</p>
<p>You can find the Site Speed report in the newest version of Google Analytics under content reports.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3196" title="Google analytics page load time" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Google-Analytics-Page-Load-.jpg" alt="Google analytics page load time" /></p>
<p>At the moment all your values should show 0 in the Page Load Time and Page Load Sample attributes of the report.  To enable Analytics to start tracking and recording data you will need to add a line of code to your Google Analytics tracking code:</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #00cc00;">_gaq.push(['_trackPageLoadTime']);</span></strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>See the following example with Page Load Time code installed, please note this is if you are using the Asynchronous tracking code (your tracking code is in your &lt;head&gt; section of your site):</p>
<pre>&lt;script&gt;
 var _gaq = _gaq || [];
 _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);
 _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
<span style="color: #00cc00;"> <strong>_gaq.push(['_trackPageLoadTime']);</strong></span>

 (function() {
   var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
   ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www')</pre>
<pre>+ '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
   var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
 })();
&lt;/script&gt;</pre>
<p>If you are using the older traditional tracking code you will need to add the following:</p>
<pre>&lt;script&gt;
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js'</pre>
<pre> type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
&lt;/script&gt;

&lt;script&gt;
try{
 var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxx-x");
 pageTracker._trackPageview();
 <strong><span style="color: #00cc00;">pageTracker._trackPageLoadTime();</span></strong>
} catch(err) {}
&lt;/script&gt;</pre>
<p>You should start to receive data within a few hours.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had the opportunityt to speak at SES this year &#8211; which was a great honour. Somehow I was asked to discuss Tracking and Attribution alongside the MD from VCCP Search. It&#8217;s not my expertise but my intro to the subject was well received (I hope!) &#8211; we will load up the presentation on our site next week in our<a title="search marketing news" href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/internet-marketing-news/tug-whitepapers.php" target="_self"> search marketing news </a>section. I had to rush home to collect my daughter but was still able to see 2 other presentations &#8211; here are my outtakes from the 3 sessions:</p>
<p><strong>Attribution panel (myself and Paul Mead):</strong> before you decide to drop last click wins and start using an attribution model &#8211; ask yourself &#8211; and analyse the data &#8211; how long is your typical clients&#8217; path to converion? if it&#8217;susuallty only 1 or 2 clicks &#8211; stick with your current tracking model. Don&#8217;t overcomplicate just for the sake of it. Eventhough the technology now is truly amazing for analysing paths&#8217; to conversion and setting up attribution models &#8211; there will always be leakage within the system and it is still a bit of a fudge&#8230; attribution models are much more useful for products that have a long purchase cycle &#8211; if you&#8217;re selling t-shirts &#8211; don&#8217;t waste your time and money!</p>
<p><strong>Retargetting panel: </strong>That search ignite guy is pretty impressive &#8211; as was the speaker from Banner. Top tips I picked up were: 1. use the cookie data you have &#8211; if you know they want a flight to spain definitely advertise that not a generic flight ad 2. Test your re-targeting window &#8211; one speaker found that the most efficient was to retarget only for 7 days after the first engagement 3. Don&#8217;t stalk &#8211; actually i knew that from when I was single&#8230;. 4.  swap remarketiong tags (illegal?) with a partner site that has a complimentary service 5. dont retarget to everyone who came to your site and didn&#8217;t convert &#8211; make sure they had some engagement such as they got half way through the application form, or they viewed 3 or more pages etc.</p>
<p><strong>Biddable Media:</strong> again that search ignite guy is pretty smart &#8211; good at taking a concept and drilling down to what&#8217;s important &#8211; I only saw his speech before I had to go pick up Amelia. He made 2 good points &#8211; 1. the cool thing about display auctions is not the fact that they are auction based &#8211; search has been like that for a decade. The cool thing is that you are bidding on targetting an individual with all the cookie data recorded on this person &#8211; if they are your sweet spot an advertiser might be willing to pay 10 times what someone might pay for just a blind impression. 2. agencies are starting biddable media departments&#8230;.. food for thought for all Search MDs&#8230;</p>

<p>So there you have it, an ever growing list of Google related products that we use on a day to day basis without even realising it. I think that the day is soon approaching where we don&#8217;t even refer to it as the Internet any more and it will be simply named Google&#8230; Instead of &#8220;Surfing the Web&#8221;, it will be &#8220;Surfing the Google&#8221;, granted it&#8217;s not very catchy but you get my point!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So you&#8217;ve created a facebook fan page and you’ve got a few fans, but to really know how many people are viewing your page and where they are coming from you need to see the facts and figures. This tutorial will show you how to add Google Analytics tracking to your Facebook Fan Page.</p>
<h2><strong>Step 1.  Google Analytics setup</strong></h2>
<p>First of all, if you haven’t already create yourself a Google analytics account at <cite><a href="http://www.google.com/analytics/">www.<strong>google</strong>.com/<strong>analytics</strong>/</a> </cite><cite>and create a new Website profile specifically for the fan page. Call it something like facebook.com or facebook.com/page_name and click finish.  You will be given a unique analytics tracking code, all we need from this code is the UA number e.g. UA-1456736-8</cite></p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/analyticsnew4.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1203" title="analyticsnew" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/analyticsnew4.jpg" alt="analyticsnew" /></a></p>
<p><cite> </cite></p>
<h2><strong><cite>Step 2.  Make your tracking code Facebook friendly</cite></strong></h2>
<p><cite>Now there’s a <a href="http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/">handy tool</a> from webdigi that will turn your analytics code into an image that you can add to facebook &#8211; </cite><a href="http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/">http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/</a></p>
<p>Fill out the form with the following:</p>
<ol>
<li><cite>1. </cite>Your unique analytics code “<cite>UA-1456736-8”</cite><cite></cite></li>
<li><cite>2. </cite><cite>The Domain name that you entered into Google analytics e.g. facebook.com</cite><cite></cite></li>
<li>Page link is to identify the fan page when you see it analytics e.g. home_page</li>
<li>This is a short description of the page e.g. Home Page</li>
</ol>
<p>Then click on generate code</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/image-generator.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1185" title="image-generator" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/image-generator.jpg" alt="image-generator" /></a></p>
<p>The generated code should look like this:</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;">&lt;img src=&#8217;http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/fbga.php?googlecode=UA-1456736-8&amp;googledomain=facebook.com&amp;pagelink=home_page&amp;pagetitle=Home%20Page&#8217;&gt;&lt;/img&gt;</span></p>
<p>Now keep the code safe for step 3</p>
<h2><strong>Step 3. Add the code to your Facebook fan page</strong></h2>
<p>Go to your Fan page and Click &#8220;edit page&#8221;</p>
<p>Scroll down to &#8220;more applications&#8221; and click to add the application called “static FBML” also know as: Static Facebook Markup language</p>
<p>Then click add to my page</p>
<p>Go back to your fan page and click on &#8220;boxes&#8221; and then Click the icon to edit the FBML and click move to wall which will move the static FBML box to a tab on your fan home page</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/move-to-wall1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1191" title="move-to-wall" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/move-to-wall1.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="106" /></a></p>
<p>Go back to your Fan page and again click onto &#8220;edit page&#8221; and scroll down to the FBML section and click &#8220;edit&#8221;.  Now this is where you paste the image code created in step 2 and click save changes.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/save-changes.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1193" title="save-changes" src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/save-changes.jpg" alt="" width="617" height="427" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Voila! </strong>Now all you have to do is wait about 24hours and Google will start tracking traffic to your page</p>

With this new feature you can search for a topic and then look at a timeline for the year or month. Once you&#8217;ve chosen a date in the month you can search all the results on that day. See below for a quote from the <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/replay-it-google-search-across-twitter.html">Google Blog</a>:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;With the advent of blogs and micro-blogs, there’s a constant online conversation about breaking news, people and places — some famous and some local. Tweets and other short-form updates create a history of commentary that can provide valuable insights into what’s happened and how people have reacted. We want to give you a way to search across this information and make it useful.</p>
<p>Starting today, you can zoom to any point in time and “replay” what people were saying publicly about a topic on Twitter. To try it out, click “Show options” on the search results page, then select “Updates.” The first page will show you the familiar latest and greatest short-form updates from a comprehensive set of sources, but now there’s a new chart at the top. In that chart, you can select the year, month or day, or click any point to view the tweets from that specific time period&#8230;.&#8221;</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.tugsearch.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/googlebigyahoosmall.jpg" alt="google big yahoo small" />The annual UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report, which surveyed 800 client companies, agencies and search consultants, has found that 55% of companies intend to increase natural search budgets and just under half (45%) will up paid search investment this year as they look for measurable ROI in difficult economic times.</p>
<p>Covering the Report, NMA had this to say:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Some 48% reported better returns on natural search (optimisation) campaigns and 43% claim greater ROI on paid search (pay-per-click). However, 15% reported decreasing effectiveness for paid search compared to just 6% for natural.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="47"><em>The report, conducted by Econsultancy in association with search company Guava, found more companies were tracking ROI effectively than last year &#8211; 45% of respondents who used paid search campaigns and 35% using natural.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="48"><em>Linus Gregoriadis, research director at Econsultancy, said, “It’s encouraging to see a large proportion of companies still increasing budgets for both paid and natural search. It shows they’re better at measuring returns for search, and that’s good at a time when budgets are being cut.”</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="49"><em>The report also revealed the end of Google’s Best Practice Funding had little effect on the market, with just 5% of companies reporting a negative impact since 1 January. However, 15% of respondents said Google’s trademark bidding policy had had a negative impact on ROI.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="50"><em>Unsurprisingly Google remained the behemoth for paid search, with 85% using the search engine, well ahead of Yahoo (44%)  and Microsoft Live (30%). Yahoo took the biggest hit year on year, with 5% fewer companies using it for paid search.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="51"><em>Mobile search remained static, with just 5% of companies investing in mobile search listings. Despite 23% of respondents planning to invest in mobile search this year, more than two-thirds (37%) said mobile isn’t on the radar yet and a further 32% have no plans to use mobile search.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="52"><em>“Mobile search represents a huge opportunity for companies as there’s no one really doing it,” said Gregoriadis.</em></p>
<p jQuery1240566361390="53"><em>The report also revealed huge growth in investment in social media, which 65% of companies saying it’s used as part of the marketing mix. Twitter was used for marketing by 49% of respondents, compared to just 3% a year ago.&#8221;</em></p>
