Google Wave becomes Apache Wave

Apparently, this 31st of December won’t be the end of Google Wave as announced initially. Apache Software Foundation, the nonprofit organization that maintains the Apache open source projects has agreed to include Google Wave in its program.

Apache hopes that the community of developers that continued working on Google Wave will have more support and stability. And also one of its primary goals is to migrate the base code from code.google.com to its foundation.

In August, Google announced that they had failed to develop a project to communicate and collaborate in real time because they didn’t reach the level of usage expected. Since then they’ve focused their efforts on Wave in a Box, the aggregated version that would allow developers to use the features they already had before by moving them to their own servers.

Google’s recent attempt to revolutionise email, instant messaging and blogging with their innovation Google wave has officially ceased development. The announcement was made in a post on the official Google Blog by Senior Vice President of communications Urs Holzle.

“Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product”

Google Wave Beta Rolling out September 2009

The new communication tool by Google which aims to integrate all of Google’s services into one hub now has a beta date of 30th September 2009. Google have already given out access to around 6,000 developers. The beta is planned to be open to around 100,000 users on wave.google.com Below is a small quote from the Google Wave Blog about the beta rollout:

“In other news: this morning we announced that we plan to start extending the Google Wave preview beyond developers on September 30th. This will take place on wave.google.com rather than the separate “sandbox” instance we are currently using, and we plan to involve about 100,000 users. In addition to the developers already using Wave, we will invite groups of users from the hundreds of thousands who offered to help report bugs when they signed up on wave.google.com….”
