It is 2012 with many promises, predictions and wishes. Naturally with the new year new features, stories and discoveries appear:

Are you a complete coffee addict? I tried to limit my love for coffee and was successful for a month, but getting back to work makes you sleepy in the mornings, so coffee is back in my life again. Anyway, when you are getting to work, you usually stop at the near by coffee shop just to grab that life saving cup, right? Do you get late to work sometimes because of that? Well, now there is a solution! If you love Starbuck’s coffee, live in the UK and you are an owner of an iPhone, from the 5th January you are able to use the unique Starbucks App on your iPhone. This app will help to locate your closest Starbucks coffee shop, choose a drink, manage your Starbucks Card balance, top-up direct from your iPhone or iPod Touch AND pay for your drink using the virtual Starbucks

Card just by swiping the barcode at the till. Isn’t that super convenient? Did I mention that the app is available for free from the Apple App Store? They say that an Android app will follow later in the year. The app is well placed to take advantage of Starbucks’ loyal customers – one in five UK customers already pays using a Starbucks Card, so if the app will save a lot of time to Starbucks customers, no doubt it may become a hit as well in the UK.

The app proved to be a success in the United States with 26m purchases made since it was launched in January 2011.

Think again. Apple prohibits third-parties from handing out its mobile devices in giveaways, and although this rule has been in place since January, if not earlier, according to Fortune, the company has just begun to enforce it.

Apple’s Guidelines for Third Party Promotions decree the following: “iPad, iPhone, and the iPhone Gift Card may not be used in third-party promotions; iPod touch is only allowed to be used in special circumstances and requires a minimum purchase of 250 units; you may not use the Myriad Set font on or in connection with websites, products, packaging, manuals, or promotional/advertising materials; the use of “free” as a modifier in any Apple product reference in a prominent manner (headlines, call-outs, etc.) is prohibited; you must submit all marketing materials related to the promotion of Apple products to Apple for review.”

Cult of Mac has a running list of nearly 40 sites including Mashable, Geeksugar, and Mahalo that have held such promotions, but none seem to have been squashed. Until now.

It appears the Apple fans that just can’t spend $500 plus of their hard-earned cash for an iPad 2 have lost the chance to potentially nab an Apple product. While Fortune says Apple has started to shut down promotions, it didn’t specifically cite any campaigns that have been suspended.

And the war between Samsung and iPhone is also a common thing going on at the moment. I have recently read that it takes approximately 20 – 30 minutes daily for an Android phone user to explain why he/she didn’t buy an iPhone – not sure how true or false is this hypothesis, though.

Although Apple has succeeded to successfully block the sales of selected Samsung devices in a couple countries around the globe, this hasn’t stopped the Samsung Galaxy series of phones from becoming an international success. The South Korean company Samsung announced yesterday that the sales of the Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy S II have got up to 30 million. That’s right, Samsung sold 30 million Galaxy S series units worldwide (between the S and S II devices). Thanks to the powerful phone and the Android platform it uses (which is also a huge hit these days) the first generation Samsung Galaxy S has reached nearly 20 million, while its sequel, the Samsung Galaxy S II recently passed the 10 million mark.

Samsung reports that the Galaxy S II is the fastest selling device to date in the company. It took the Samsung Galaxy S II only five months to break 10 million units sold. Adding to the success story of the device, the Samsung Galaxy S II received various accolades such as the “Mobile Choice” and “Consumer Award, 2011″ and the “Phone of the Year” title from the Gadget Awards 2011.

Congratulations to Samsung achieving this amazing success!

The camera is one of the biggest headaches for the company, however Apple’s co-founder is hoping that these problems are all solved.

The white iPhone was promised by Apple several months ago, shortly after it appeared the standard version of the phone in July last year.

When Wozniak tried to take pictures with flash activated the resulting images were awful, as if they were covered with cellophane – as recorded by VatorNews. This means that the white case causes interference with the camera and the pictures come out overexposed to light.

According to the co-founder of Apple, they have already solved all the problems relating to the white iPhone 4 and it should go for sale soon. Wozniak praised the Android platform, claiming that the platform has many features that the iPhone 4 hasn’t.

With rumors indicating the release of the iPad 2 and the deal with Verizon for the iPhone 4 almost done, Apple now has to face the setback that comes from a new dispute with Microsoft. Microsoft has placed a complaint in the U.S. Patent and Trademark office for Apple to lose ownership of the term ‘app store’.

Apple registered the term ‘app store’ back in 2008, when it launched its first 3G iPhone. It was a website where users could buy applications for their iPhones.

According to rumors, iOS 4.3 will be available for download on the 13th of December, with a few improvements like the Murdoch’s diary that the iPad already has.

The iOS 4.2 update was mainly for the iPad, which now has multitasking and a single mailbox among other features, in December we could have even more striking improvements for the iPhone.

According to MacStories, Apple could release the iOS 4.3 in 20 days. The date was provided by sources and because Apple called for a press event on the 9th of December. Apple, despite its love for the show and hype, they don’t gather media for an upgrade of its operating system. That’s why we are hoping that the new Apple update will be a big one!

This feature enables you to be able to make search queries through google using the camera on your phone instead of text.

When you take a photo, Google will analyse the image and highlight the objects it recognises, all you have to do then is click on them to find out the info your looking for.

This is more of an experimental tool at the moment, as I can see quite a few faults that could regularly occur , e.g. Google not recognising the photo. Never the less, it’s new & exciting and Google are looking in to all the possibilities of visual search and hope to update and improve as much as they can.

The NDP Group in America have reported that Android is now the top selling Smartphone OS in the US. They’ve attributed this to the new handset innovations by both HTC and Motorola. Last quarter Android accounted for 33% of smartphones sold, followed up by Blackberry with 28% and Apple’s iPhone in third place with 22%. With a number of new high spec handsets from Samsung and Motorola the Smartphone OS share for Android is expected to rise even further. The following is what Ross Rubbin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD had to say:

“For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers, “While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch.”

“Blackberry 6 will soon offer features that have been popular in recently launched Android handsets, such as support for capacitive touchscreens and a WebKit-based browser. However, the Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen allure that has characterized the best selling Android devices at its price point, including the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G,”

Read the official press release from NPD here. With this news, it is now more important than ever to include Android devices for your Mobile Search Services.
