Last day before Christmas Eve and the office is so calm. I guess a lot of people are in the festive spirit. I am more excited about the New Years Eve – want to see the fireworks in London. They say it will be fantastic this year, so can’t wait.

Just because it is the 23rd December, here are some festive fun facts for you:

I always thought that every year the most popular Christmas songs would be ‘Last Christmas’ or ‘I’m dreaming of a white Christmas’ but it appears that in 2011 two boys are at the top: Michael Buble with his song ‘Christmas’ and Justin Bieber with his song ‘Under the Mistletoe’. Nevertheless, if you would ask random people to sing a Christmas song, no matter what year it is, I strongly believe that they will start to sing something from the classics, rather than the new songs.

Just like for every massive occasion, Christmas is one of those when companies are making TV, video adverts and trying to put a creative note to them. Top Christmas video adverts this year were made by Iceland, Argos and my personal favourite John Lewis Christmas advert - it’s just very, very cute. I first saw it in the cinema and the ending just created a huge “Awwwww!” wave from everyone in the room. Thumbs up to John Lewis for creating such a great video.

Do you have the struggle to choose Christmas gifts? Personally I really get confused and tired of trying to find something really good. Apparently in 2011 the most popular Christmas gifts are Tablets, Lego and Travel Mugs. So if you are doing you last minute Christmas shopping today or tomorrow this try to consider those three options.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and Fantastic New Year!

The Case Study is on Tug’s work with Pathe on Slumdog Millionaire. See below for a quote from the website:

“Slumdog Millionaire has been one of the biggest box office earners of the year with earnings to date of over $243M. This is a record for a film that was made by film company Pathé with a small budget of just $15M.

So, how did a British film produced by Danny Boyle with a modest budget become such a huge hit? How was the film, depicting life in the slums of Mumbai, so well marketed that everyone was talking about it long before it went on general release?…..”

“Tactical use of pay per click advertising (PPC) from Slumdog Millionaire to the travel downturn

This session explores the use of pay per click advertising as a tactical marketing tool. One of the strengths of PPC is that it can be turned on and off to meet tactical objectives, budgets and consumer demand. If necessary, an effective PPC campaign can be hastily prepared to meet a changing business environment.

As examples, two case studies are discussed in depth. First, driving traffic volume and engagement for the UK launch of Slumdog Millionaire, using text ads, banners and click to play video ads. Second, reaping the benefits of a travel competitor’s demise through aggressive bidding and messaging coupled with consumer friendly landing pages.

Tug have released a new whitepaper about Social Media Optimisation and Search Engine Optimisation, in this whitepaper we talk about how you can use Social Media to assist your SEO Campaign. See below for a small quote from the whitepaper:

“The majority of social media websites will allow you to post links to a website, be this your website or a related website; this could be done using profiles, videos, pictures, blogs and more. It’s also worth noting that once a user has interacted with you on a social media website; it’s highly likely that they will link to your website at a later point; this could be on a forum or just an email. This can all result in an increase in both exposure and traffic, which will result in a higher page rank and therefore an improved search engine ranking….”

To read the full whitepaper head over to the Whitepaper section on the Tug website and select “Social Media Optimisation (SMO) for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)“

Google have recently released the audio indexing service (beta version) for YouTube videos –known as GAudi, which will undoubtedly make an impact in SEO practices within the following years. Although still in a developing stage and with many bugs and issues to be dealt with; it is expected that the service translates into text the audio of the videos uploaded to the popular video distribution channel.

What does audio indexing service mean? Well, in the first place, it implies that even when talking people should be aware that it is necessary including keyword rich phrases within relevant topics! Secondly, by implementing GAudi, Google are getting closer to Universal Search, which we at Tug, Search Engine Optimisation, believe is just around the corner. Finally, although GAudi will only index videos from YouTube, it is believed that it should not take too long before they extend the service to other popular video distribution channels.

The big task? Not only is required a hyper high speech recognition quality, but also certain extend of cognitive semantics to understand and associate the meaning of any phrase before relating it to a more generic topic. We are already excited about the future!
