Below we have pulled out some key quotes from his letter that are worth checking out.

On Facebook as a business

“We don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.”

On Facebook and politics

“We believe that leaders will emerge across all countries who are pro-internet and fight for the rights of their people, including the right to share what they want and the right to access all information that people want to share with them.”

On Hackers

“The word “hacker” has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers. In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done. Like most things, it can be used for good or bad, but the vast majority of hackers I’ve met tend to be idealistic people who want to have a positive impact on the world.”

Hacker culture is also extremely open and meritocratic. Hackers believe that the best idea and implementation should always win – not the person who is best at lobbying for an idea or the person who manages the most people.”

Unofficial slogan?

“We have a saying: “Move fast and break things.”

Read the full letter here on engadget:

As Google gets new updates and the algorithm becomes smarter, the job of SEOs has to modify its practices in order to keep up. As my main activity is link building I am always testing new ways to deliver great results and to anticipate trends. I strongly believe that social mentions and back links have an equal weight for rankings, saying that, I have compiled these suggestions to get the most out of your link building campaigns:

When you are looking to publish a guest post for your clients or get a link, avoid evaluating your host with the old criteria: Page Rank, DA, MozRank. Nowadays it is more important if your contact has a good amount of followers and fans because you need to get tweets and likes out from your guest blogging activities.

Make a good use of Social Bookmarking tools and open themed accounts for every industry you are working for. After that remember to bookmark all your links and articles out there. If you want to be more efficient organise a community of people that bookmark your content, that will make your content attractive for the search engine and it will be indexed quickly with good social signals.

When you are doing guest blogging, maximise your effort. Tweet about a new post from the client social media account; ask the blogger to do the same and social bookmark everything.

Establish online relationships and start multiple collaborations. I have a great new idea, which is to get in touch students with businesses they are interested to work for. This way you can really set up new ways of producing great content for free.

As Google+ is definitely supporting the creation of personas (now you can connect articles to authors via G+) every business should choose a public speaker that can produce useful content for the web. It is something that was already in the sight as some companies started to use this strategy on Twitter for customer service.

Thanks to Claire from BrightonMums, i am happy to share some SEO expertise with UK mum bloggers community. Feel free to connect with Tug, the marketing agency I am working for and learn more about how to promote your site.
Drop me a tweet @Tugagency if you have any questions!

Firstly, I would recommend you to use these suggestions carefully as you shouldn’t change your editorial style in order to be SEO friendly. Let’s get straight to the practice and see how a mom blog can meet Google standards:

1) Look at what people search with Google Keywords tool. In order to reach these users you should include some of these terms in the title tags, alt tag of images and/or in the first 100 characters of the post.

2) If you work with WordPress, our suggested platform, install any SEO pack in order to personalise meta descriptions and title tags with the keywords that people search for and that describe your article. Google XML sitemap is another great plug-in that creates a map of your site and send it to the search engine. If you don’t use WordPress, check online on how to optimize the title tag and the description of your posts and how to submit a sitemap to Google.

3) Create social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google+) and bookmarking (Reddit, Stumbleupon, Delicious and Digg) profiles for your blogs and share your content online. For Twitter remember to include related hash tags while for Facebook and G+ work include images. Sometimes ask to share your article if you feel that it can be of interest for the community. In 2012 social mentions are going to be an important ranking factor.

4) Add your blog to online free directories and write guest blogs with a link back to your one. The more links which are pointing back to you, the higher your ranking will be. Another good technique is to answer questions (Yahoo Answer and Quora) and comment other posts with useful information.

5) This is a great infograph on blog copywriting that explains how you can improve the readability of your text. I would add that you should link to other similar articles in your site if there are any.

Share this post to help build the great British mum blogger community!

So you’ve created a facebook fan page and you’ve got a few fans, but to really know how many people are viewing your page and where they are coming from you need to see the facts and figures. This tutorial will show you how to add Google Analytics tracking to your Facebook Fan Page.

Step 1. Google Analytics setup

First of all, if you haven’t already create yourself a Google analytics account at www.google.com/analytics/ and create a new Website profile specifically for the fan page. Call it something like facebook.com or facebook.com/page_name and click finish. You will be given a unique analytics tracking code, all we need from this code is the UA number e.g. UA-1456736-8

Step 2. Make your tracking code Facebook friendly

Now there’s a handy tool from webdigi that will turn your analytics code into an image that you can add to facebook – http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/

Fill out the form with the following:

1. Your unique analytics code “UA-1456736-8”

2. The Domain name that you entered into Google analytics e.g. facebook.com

Page link is to identify the fan page when you see it analytics e.g. home_page

This is a short description of the page e.g. Home Page

Then click on generate code

The generated code should look like this:

<img src=’http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/fbga.php?googlecode=UA-1456736-8&googledomain=facebook.com&pagelink=home_page&pagetitle=Home%20Page’></img>

Now keep the code safe for step 3

Step 3. Add the code to your Facebook fan page

Go to your Fan page and Click “edit page”

Scroll down to “more applications” and click to add the application called “static FBML” also know as: Static Facebook Markup language

Then click add to my page

Go back to your fan page and click on “boxes” and then Click the icon to edit the FBML and click move to wall which will move the static FBML box to a tab on your fan home page

Go back to your Fan page and again click onto “edit page” and scroll down to the FBML section and click “edit”. Now this is where you paste the image code created in step 2 and click save changes.

Voila! Now all you have to do is wait about 24hours and Google will start tracking traffic to your page

Link generation is the primary method to increase both your search engine positioning and also your traffic.

When it comes to the inbound links themselves, they can be in various formats. Ideally, you should be obtaining different types of one-way links to your websites to increase the diversity. The following are a few examples of the different types of backlinks available.

Inbound links from blogs:

These come from posting blog comments. If you find a blog that is related to your industry/service/products, you can leave a useful and constructive comment (not spam e.g. ‘I like this’ or ‘excellent read I will come back here often’ or simply ‘well done’), including targeted keywords as your name and a URL to link back to your site.

One-way links from forums:

These are simply one-way links that come from your forum profiles themselves. The backlinks are dropped inside your BIO / signature with your own anchor text.

Inbound links from web 2.0 sites:

These are backlinks from websites such as squidoo and hubpages and these types of backlink can rank very well. You can take advantage of articles here that include your keywords in the ‘title’ and 2/3 time in the article body. You can insert URL inbound links with anchor and also RSS feeds.

Another important thing is to get these links indexed!

Ping your links to the top RPC directories

What pinging does is to inform the search engine that your new content is available on various sites via RPC. These sites have huge amounts of updates, thus are crawled frequently by the search engines.

Naturally Youtube has taken advantage of this and has been running a few beta tests on the idea with full html video pages.

You can now sign up to a beta testing area which will run all your videos without the need for a flash plugin which should lead to a much better user experience, less crashes and hopefully all run a little faster.

This is currently only open to Chrome and Safari users but we can’t imagine firefox will be far off. The only limitations are it won’t play full screen and if they have ads, or aren’t available in h.264, you will get the usual Flash player.

Add yourself into the beta here http://youtube.com/html5

Today marks the end of an era. Over 18 million websites are being deleted and Yahoo!’s free hosting service Geocities is being shut down for good. Long-forgotten personal sites lying dormant on their servers would occasionally pop up in a Google search and remind us all of the early days of HTML.
</ br>
</ br>Geocities marked a point in time when the internet first began to gain popularity, more and more excited computer owners were getting connected in their homes with the power of 33k modems clogging up their phone lines. Geocities granted literally anybody the ability to create their own site…with varying degrees of success. Whether learning HTML from scratch or using their shockingly poor web-builder tool, for many this marked the beginning of a web design career and the start of a journey into SEO. How else would people find their amazing Rugrats fansite in Yahoo!? People finally had the freedom to create sites about their favourite subjects, or even themselves. Groups of fans could come together and join web rings to link their sites together. In many ways, Geocities provided a precursor to blogs, profile sites that we now label “Web 2.0”.
</ br>
</ br>As Geocities closes its doors, if we learn anything let it be that if you give people design freedom, they will never steer clear of giant, glittering animated gifs and irritating music.
</ br>
</ br>We’ll miss you, Geocities.</ BR>

Adapting some of the technology pioneered by Google News, we’re now showing categories on the left side of the website and organizing the blog posts within those categories into clusters, which are groupings of posts about the same story or event. Grouping them in clusters lets you see the best posts on a story or get a variety of perspectives. When you look within a cluster, you’ll find a collection of the most interesting and recent posts on the topic, along with a timeline graph that shows you how the story is gaining momentum in the blogosphere.”
