Littlewoods advert…I like it

So I don’t know if you have seen the Littlewoods Christmas advert this year but I like it. It’s a children’s nativity all about presents and gifts. Sounds pretty normal. However it has been plagued with hundreds of complaints. Mum’s and Dad’s are accusing it of ‘ruining Christmas for kids’. Their Facebook page and the ad on YouTube have been hit by numerous comments requesting that the advert be banned.

“What a great example to kids to know that what makes a mother a good one is how much over-expensive bling she buys them at Christmas.”

Littlewoods is attempting to keep the damage to a minimum by disabling the comment option on YouTube and apparently censoring its Facebook page – although it has denied this. They are maintaining that the number of complaints in comparison to the number of views is minimal and the positive response overshadows the minority.

Series of Fun Facts: Part I

It’s Friday, so lets tap ourselves on the shoulders for work well done this week (as I truly believe that no matter what, this week was good for everyone is one way or the other).

Do you like to find out different, interesting information? I know I do. Especially those little fun facts, that won’t crucially change your rhythm, but gives you that “Hmm, I didn’t know that – it’s interesting” feeling.

Fun Fact Nr. 1: We all know that YouTube is a video-sharing website. I personally found interesting that it was created by 3 former PayPal employees (Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim) in February 2005, so in 2012 little YouTube is going to be 7 years old. YouTube is based in San Bruno, California, but it’s early headquarters were situated above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. According to a story that has often been repeated in the media, Hurley and Chen developed the idea for YouTube after they had experienced difficulty sharing videos that had been shot at a dinner party at Chen’s apartment. Karim didn’t attend the party and denied that it actually occurred, while Hurley commented that the idea of YouTube being found after a dinner party was probably a marketing idea to create a true and digestible story. The very first YouTube video was entitled “Me at the zoo” and shows founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. The video is still available: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw It is 18 seconds long, was shot at 8:27PM on the 23rd April 2005 and posted live that same day.

Fun Fact Nr. 2: Did you know that you are able to express yourself in 140 characters and allow other people read it a.k.a. tweet nearly 6 years now? Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched in July 2006. Twitter gained worldwide popularity with over 300 MILLION users and generating over 300 MILLION tweets per day. Twitter’s origins lie in a brainstorming session held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Dorsey introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The original project code name for the service was twttr. Work on the project started on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message at 9:50PM “just setting up my twttr”. The first Twitter prototype was used as an internal service for Odeo employees and the full version was introduced publicly on July 15, 2006. Twitter spun off into its own company in April 2007.

Fun Fact Nr. 3: As a blogger I can say that personally after trying Google’s blogspot.com and wordpress. com the second option is more closer to my convenience. WordPress first appeared in 2003 as a joint effort between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. The name WordPress itself was suggested by a friend of Mullenweg Christine Selleck. WordPress won several awards – in 2007 it won a Packt Open Source CMS Award, then in 2009 won the Packt best Open Source CMS Award. In 2010 WordPress won the Hall of Fame CMS catefory in the 2010 Open Source Awards and in 2011 won the Open Source Web App of the Year Award at the Critters. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet‘s top 1 million websites and as of August 2011 powers 22% of all new websites. Currently it is the most popular CMS in use on the Internet. As of February this year, the version 3.0 was downloaded 32.5 MILLION TIMES.

Google Panda update 2.5: losers & winners in the Web

After Panda 2.0 back in April, the main search engine continues a process of refining and optimizing the SERP to provide a better quality for the users. Google has released their latest algorithm update, namely Panda 2.5 on the 28th September effecting major and small players in the World Wide Web.

Thanks to SearchMetrics, a search analytics agency that keep a wide track of websites’ rankings, some of the effects of the Panda update 2.5 are now visible.

There were some big surprises for major players such as The Next Web and NBC’s The Today Show which have been negatively affected. In the social bookmarking world, unexpectedly Technocrati has been hit hard, with Reddit, StumbleUpon and Digg celebrating for less competitors around.

Despite that, SEO consultants are keeping in mind that maybe SM hasn’t kept track of low traffic keywords that could have increased their rankings. On the other hand, the winner list is adorned by YouTube and other Larry Page owned sites such as Android.com and partners such as AOL.com and TV.com. Moreover, American news sites that have succeeded include the Washington Post, US Weekly and the Wall Street Journal.

Certainly YouTube’s rise from 3% to 9% as Aaron Wall of SEO book explains are bound to lead to criticisms because the company is actually favouring its own sites.

In conclusion, while many are trying to understand the changes and repair the damages, it seems necessary to optimize websites with ethical SEO practices in order to not be punished by the future Google updates that are going to analyse the on-page optimization and the back links much deeper.

For retail business owners, some serious SEM concerns are: improving the brand’s authority, increasing visibility and driving traffic from engaged consumers, and how to achieve all these goals with relatively small budgets using a long-term “sustainable” strategy, well, many businesses do not take advantages of video content.

Not only are video results less competitive than traditional search –making it easier to achieve better results, but also these are frequently featured in universal results, with around 40% higher click through rate than the traditional blue links.

Optimising a video is more straightforward than it sounds: Make sure to use consistent keywords across titles, descriptions, file names and tags; and produce and submit a video sitemap in order to increase the chances of the video content getting indexed in the major search engines.

But it is not only about keywords, investing in high quality pays off. Make the video stand out with interesting and entertaining content, add the logo of the company and in different frames include calls to action. Lastly add a full transcript of the video in the landing page that will help to improve the overall quality of the page.

Pro tip: optimise for ‘review’-related keywords as these are more likely to get featured in universal results! Informational keywords such as ‘ipad 2 review’ or ‘gap jeans review’ will include video results than any transactional searches like ‘buy nikon d300′ or ‘buy mazda 3 2011′

Apart from all the above, you should bear in mind that YouTube is the second largest search engine beating the likes of Bing and Yahoo! So consider setting up a video channel on this platform and interact with your visitors providing information about your products.

YouTube has secured the services of Green Parrot Pictures, this company has worked in the past on film projects like; The Lord of the Rings or X-Men and they have advanced technology that allows them to improve the quality of video productions. By doing this YouTube tries to increase the playback speed while consuming less bandwidth.

I LOVED MasterChef….call it a guilty pleasure if you like but I know I’m not alone! Which is why this caught my eye and made me laugh out loud. Michel Roux Jr and Greg Wallace extolling the virtues of Pot Noodles with a packet of soy sauce. For dessert, chocolate mousse with spray-can cream. Brilliant!

The Google Beat: New vblog on search trends

A few weeks ago, Google released a vblog called: “The Google Beat.”

The interesting thing about this new channel on YouTube videos, is that focuses on the most popular searches made on Google (USA).

Apparently we’ll have a new video every week, with data obtained from tools like Google Insights, Google Trends and “other” tools used by SEOs.

Perhaps it will be a service similar to Yahoo Buzz but in a video … something that may make it more interesting and useful at the same time …

The student who made a fool of You Tube in only three hours

It all started last Thursday, with a harmless bet in a college dorm at Stanford. Feross Aboukhadijeh is the name of our hero here. He challenged his roommate that he could improve YouTube’s search engine. The feat consisted of doing something something similar to what Google had acomplished a few days before by releasing Google Instant (results appear at the same time as users begin to type what they want to find).

Three hours:
Feross lost the bet, because it took three hours for him to create YouTube Instant, and he promised that it would be ready in one hour. Through their Twitter, Facebook accounts and his blog, they announced to the world their achievement.

In just 24 hours, he was in the homepage of hundreds of technology sites, highlighting not only what he, a student, had achieved, but the flaws of Google as a company, having invested hundreds of hours and loads of money to create what a kid did in his room in about the same time it takes to watch Avatar.

To complete the humiliation Feross rejected a job offer from You Tube, beacuse he already works for Facebook…

Youtube Partners with Blinkbox to give us Free Movies!

Youtube have partnered with the Online Movie Rental website, Blinkbox, to launch a New and best of all… Free Movie section for the UK.

This feature has been available for quite some time in the US, but it’s something for us Brits to get excited about!

You will be able to watch over 400 full length movies on Youtube UK.

Also in Youtube Pipeline are planned developments on the popular “TV Shows” section. Which shows some of the UK’s most loved programmes, such as “Peep Show”, “The Inbetweeners” & “Big Brother”.

YouTube’s head of video partnerships, Donagh O’Malley said: “This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows.”

So for all of you who are unlucky enough not to own a television set, this should be something to really look forward to!
